Great parcel from Vittore Baroni, extensive as usual, included with new pages to the next "22" issue too.

Vittore collaborate recently with Otto David Sherman, graphic artist from New York City. Sherman is not a mail artist but he works with rubber and postages stamps almost a century ago. The artist´s website displays several political celebrities in grotesque uniforms, and his recent project is a portraits of medals awarded mail artists started with Baroni and David Dellafiora. Vittore made from Sherman´s portrait an excellent artiststamps sheet.

Gábor Bódy (30 August 1946 – 25 October 1985) was a Hungarian film director, screenwriter, theoretic, and occasional actor. A pioneer of experimental filmmaking and film language, Bódy is one of the most important figures of Hungarian cinema.
In 1985 Bódy died under sketchy circumstances. No official investigation followed and Bódy's fate remains a mystery to this day.
In the last days of his life he works on new video genres.

And last but not least the biopic of Temple Grandin, (we saw it on ARTE) an autistic woman who overcame the limitations imposed on her by her condition to become an expert in the field of animal husbandry. She developed an interest in cattle early in life while spending time at her Aunt and Uncle's ranch. She did not speak until age four and had difficulty right through high school, mostly in dealing with people. Her mother was very supportive as were some of her teachers. She is noted for creating her 'hug box', widely recognized today as a way of relieving stress and her humane design for the treatment of cattle in processing plants, even winning an award from PETA. Today, she is a professor at Colorado State University.

At the beginning the pages of the first assemblings were basically much more manual; we used more stamps, glues, colours, stickers. Today we have all printers, but it strucked me, that many of us are going slowly back to basic, I make more collages, Angela Behrendt´s needle-works are legendary, Friedrich Speck - at first in our magazine - is an excellent linocutter and don´t forget Cheryl Penn´s unique mixed media pages.
I guess the mix makes a good magazine.
So far so good.

THE SHORT STORY OF 22

I am mail artist since 1995. After some changes/exchanges and participations on several mail art projects I discovered the medium called assembling magazine for me. I was fascinated from the great technical and thematical variety of the works. I took part among others on Bric a Brac, Theo Breuer´s YE, Leopold Bloom, El Mail Tao, but my favourite was Pascal Lenoir´s Mani Art. From 1984 to 2001 he published 135 issues in several forms. At the time I had been joined, it was a little A5 bounded magazine.

In year 2000 I decided to found my own assembling. I plant a little magazine with 20 participants with name „20“. Jürgen O. Olbrich, who had organized at that time an exhibition about zines in Kassel, wrote me return of post, that in the USA an art magazine named „20“ already exists and so I changed the name and the number of the participants to „22“ The Assembling Magazine of Planet Susannia.
I sent out the flyers per snail mail (Pre-Internet-Age!!) and soon afterwards better and better works came from among others Pascal Lenoir, who got not annoyed, that I took over the size and form of Mani Art, quite the reverse, he was during many years member of the hardcore, as Jürgen O. Olbrich, David Dellafiora, Vittore Baroni, Giovanni Strada, Pete Spence, Karl Friedrich Hacker, Michael Leigh, Tiziana Baracchi and nowadays Angela Behrendt, Siggi Liersch, Jörg Seifert and Piet Franzen, who participates almost in all issues.

On Cheryl´s envelopes are everytime wonderfull real original stamps, and not printed stickers from the machine of the Post Office as in Europe nowadays usual. Mostly fishes; Coral beauties (Centropyge bispinosus) by Chris van Rooyen from 2000.
Today I received Cheryl´s new pages to my magazine divided into three parcels with this fishes:

I found today new motives on the stamps: fertility figures and a neckpiece from Tsonga/Iziko Collection by Sascha Lipka 2010.
Gorgeous!

Within are great pages for the 22th issue of the assembling magazine "22".

But the works are not alone.
Cheryl is teacher in Durban and she was fascinated from the beauty of the desktops of the students and maked photos them. She sent me two images to alteration.

Till the end of november you can see in the Hungarian Stamp Museum the mail art collection of the french collector Michel Bohbot.
I visited the exhibition in september with my friend Torma Cauli and met with the very lovely directrice Gabriella Nikodém (2. right) and the museologist Monika Csete (left), who is the curator of the new project too.

Jürgen sent me this great doku with his new pages to the next issue of my assembling magazine.

Between the 19th and 25th of May, he spent a number hours each day walking around Lichtenberg and left behind performative, minimalist sculptural interventions of a humorous, reflective nature at squares, on fences and in courtyards. Took on the role of an urban "gardener" for the big city, the artist wandered through the district with a pushcart full of his materials, showcasing both himself and the urban situation at the same time.

Jürgen O. Olbrich ist zwischen dem 19. und 25. Mai täglich mehrere Stunden durch Lichtenberg gestreift und auf den Plätzen, an den Zäumen, auf den Höfen Performative und hat minimal skulpturale Interventionen mit humoristisch nachdenklichem Charakter hinterlassen. Der Künstler zog als moderner Großstadtgärtner mit seiner Schubkarre voll Material durch den Stadtteil, sich selbst und die städtische Situation ins Bild setzend.

I saw this great film yesterday on tv about the later years of the wonderfull eccentic gay icon Quentin Crisp (1908-1999). He grown up in the homophobic Great Britain in the 1920s and schocked the people with his free spirit lifestyle in the 1960s. He moved in the 80s to New York.

Sting dedicated his song Englishman in New York (1987) to Crisp.

Video about Cindy Schmid´s mail art exhibition in Greifswald, Germany

Cindy Schmid, also known as swinx, was born in Rostock in 1976. From 1995 to 1999 she did undergraduate studies in law at the university of Greifswald. From 1999 to 2002 she did an apprenticeship as a multimedia designer in Waren/Müritz. Since 2003 she has worked as a freelancer and artist in graphic design in Greifswald. Her artistic focus is the collage.
In 2010 she became acquainted with Susanna Lakner via the iuoma-website. Thus she has been infected by the Mail Art virus and participated in various Mail Art projects. Postal and personal contact to Lutz Wierszbowski. Her credo: liberty + individuality + stamp = Mail Art.

I was not a fan of Blondie. Sure, I liked Heart of Glass but that´s all.
We received just the new album Panic of Girls as gift to the July Issue of the German Rolling Stone Magazine and I would say:The Older the Wine the Better.

A fine pop album and the cover is cool.

Anh Hung Tran adapted Haruki Murakami's bestselling novel Norwegian Wood. The film opens today in Germany. Murakami is one of my favourite author, Anh Hung directed Cyclo and the Sent of Green Papaya.The soundtrack for the film by Jonny Greenwood the gitarist of the great British band Radiohead. Fantastic Three.

My friend, Torma Cauli sent me the invitation and the catalog of the Mail-Art Exhibiton Feel free! (Csak szabadon!) from the collection of the French art-lover Michel Bohbot. The vernissage was in June 18, in the Stamp Museum Budapest with the association the French Institute of Hungary. If you speak Hungarian, you can read Cauli´s eulogy and the riport of Ervin Zsubori on our collective culture dock.

I received also 2 lovely collage-postcard from Cauli with
his own artistamps, the stickers of the exhibition and the stamps of the museum.
Absolutelly authentic!
